Today we take a look over the amazing work of Joan Eardley; arguably one of the very greatest Scottish painters and a real personal hero of mine. In fact, Eardley inspired me to take a trip to Catterline, on the Scottish coast near Aberdeen, to see her cottage and where she painted, which led to my 2024 Exhibition, Kaleidoscope of Hope.
We’ll discuss what makes her work special, what I’ve learnt from her and then put that into our own practice with a series of exercises to celebrate the all-too-short, but brilliant life of Joan.
You’ll need: one wet and one dry medium. I tend to go for acrylic or gouache plus oil pastels, but you can use whatever you have to hand or in your drawers, plus a big stack of paper!
